On September 29, the assistant principal, Mr. Melhorn came into our class to talk about active shooters, and how to stay safe during an active shooter situation. Mr. Melhorn is also involved in groups where they meet and talk about safety plans for a school in case there ever did happen to be an active shooter, therefore he is very informed on the topic and knows the right protocol to take in case of any emergencies. There are 3 different actions you can take when you are involved in an active shooting. The first, and best action to take would be to evacuate the area if possible. Unless the shooter is nearby, or you do not know where he is which in that case you should hide in a safe spot instead of attempting to leave. If you come in contact with the shooter while trying to hide or evacuate, then you must try and fight them off. Using anything to throw at them, even if it’s a shoe, would help to distract them even for a second if that’s what will help you to get away from the situation quicker. If you do decide to evacuate the area, then you must have a plan for where you will exit and where you are deciding to go. If you do not have a set plan, then you should not evacuate. Not only should you have your first planned route, but you should also have a secondary route in case something goes wrong with your first plan. If you do not have a set plan or a second set route, then you could begin to panic and not know where to go or where the shooter may be. Staying calm is one of the most important actions to take while in an emergency situation like an active shooting. If you can not evacuate the area, then you must hide away in a small, dark, windowless area, and block the doors so no one can break in. If you are hidden away, then the shooter will most likely not see you and bother you. Typically when there is an active shooting, the shooters go for the victims that are in the open, and an easy target. If you can not hide, or evacuate, then anything you can do to fight the shooter off is what you should do. Throwing any heavy or sharp objects at the shooter is how you should fight back. Even if you only throw a few things at the shooter, the longer you can distract him so that he doesn't shoot you or another human is good.
If you are living during the tough time of the Black Death, you may come face to face with an active shooter. There may be healthy people who will break into homes to try to shoot and kill the ill ones. They will try to kill the weaker people so that they do not spread the disease any more. It is better if they are shot, since they will already die, than if they live longer, and spread the disease more. If an active shooter breaks into your home while you are the only one living there (because you are the only healthy one alive in your family) then you can either evacuate the house, hide in your bedroom, or fight off the shooter. In this situation I would suggest that you either fight off the shooter or try and talk the shooter down and tell them you are both innocent and healthy. If you evacuate your house then you will be entering a deadly situation because the plague spreads through the air. If you hide in a room that hasn’t been 100% sanitized, then you could also be at risk of catching the deadly disease. Staying in the home, prepared to fight off a shooter is the best way to handle an active shooter situation. As sad as it is, it is extremely important to know the right actions to take during an active shooter situation, especially because of how many active shootings occur in the U.S every year. Every school, and business area should have the correct protocol and know exactly how to handle any kind of situation in case it happens. Because of the increase of active shootings since 1982, all students and staff should know the procedure in case of any emergency.
