A women on the ship to Europe who gets infected:
I had been on the ship for almost 3 days now. It was a beautiful sunshiny day outside. All I could think about was how excited I was finally see my husband, Chris, for the first time since he got drafted to Europe. I woke up that morning, and had oatmeal for breakfast. I sat on the top deck of the ship admiring the view, and reading the newspaper. It was 12:40 p.m when we heard the announcement that we would be arriving to our destination in 30 minutes. At that time, I went back to my cabin and started packing away my clothes, and preparing to exit the ship. As I was packing everything, I heard my roommate, Mary scream at the top of her lungs. From the sound of her scream, you would’ve thought that she found a dead body in her bed. Instead, she just found a rat in her suitcase. Because I grew up on a farm and have lived on a farm my whole life, I wasn’t too worried about a rat. It was now 1:05 p.m. The ship was pulling up to the dock and people were beginning to leave. When I got off, I walked around a little, and explored the land. It wasn’t the cleanest, and everything was packed very closely together. A disease could spread like wildfire around the fort. As I was turned around looking at the view of the ocean, I felt a tap on my shoulder. At first it startled me, but when I turned around and saw it was Chris, I couldn’t stop the tears from rushing to my eyes. All I felt was love and happiness. I cried harder than I ever have before as I gave him the biggest bear hug. The General Officer approached us to welcome me and shake my hand. We all had arranged to go out for dinner that night, but the General said he would not be able to make it because he was not feeling well. Later that night after we got home from dinner, I began to unpack my belongings and lay down for the night. Once I laid down, I suddenly got an excruciating headache, and pains in my side. I thought maybe I got what the General had, but I ignored the feelings and just tried to enjoy my short visit with Chris.
A mom finding her son is infected:
I got up that morning and started making breakfast for the kids, and my husband. The eggs were sizzling in the pan, and the waffles had just popped out of the toaster.
“Come and eat guys!” I yelled, hoping they would all get out of bed to come enjoy this delicious breakfast I had prepared for them. My husband, and oldest son, John, had come to the table. Tom didn’t wake up, so I went to get him out of bed. As I opened the door I saw something scurry out of the room. I screamed once I noticed it was a black house rat.
“What’s wrong?” My husband yelled.
“I just saw a rat run out of Tom’s room!” I was aware of the very infectious disease that was being spread by the rats. I prayed to God that the rat didn’t bite Tom while he was sleeping.
“Tom, come on sweetie. It’s time to get out of bed and eat breakfast, you have to go to school soon.” He got out of bed, went to the kitchen and began eating his breakfast. He did not mention that he had any pain, or felt any bites on him, so I tried not to worry as much. After breakfast the boys got dressed, and I drove them to school. After dropping them off at school, I had to run some errands and met up with my friend for lunch. Around 11 a.m, I got a called from the school.
“Hello Mrs. Smith. This is Mrs. Jordan, the school nurse. I have Tom in my office, he claims that he’s not feeling well. He says he had a headache, and chills. I took his temperature, and it was 103 degrees. He needs to be picked up from the school immediately, and taken to the hospital.” Her voice suddenly got quiet.. “There is an extremely contagious disease going around called the Black Death. I can’t tell you 100% if that is what Tom has, but all of the signs are leading that way. He needs to be rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention. This disease is extremely deadly, and anyone who isn’t treated right away could die quickly.”
Child who finds both of her parents and 2 siblings infected:
The day started off weird when I had woken myself up for school. Every morning my mom wakes me up and nags me to get out of bed for 10 minutes until I do, and then get ready for school. That morning I woke up, and went straight to my parents room to make sure everything was okay. My mom was still sleeping, so I shook her lightly to let her know I was awake and was getting ready for school. She was half sleep talking and told me she wasn’t going to work today because she was feeling good. My dad was still asleep, as was my 3 year old brother, and my sister who is still in high school, who had off of school today. Everyone slept in and I was the only one up at 7:30 in the morning. I made myself breakfast, then drove off to my morning class. When I got home from school that day, I noticed more people were at my house. I got inside the door and the first thing I heard was “STAY OUTSIDE. EXIT THE HOUSE NOW.” There were 3 paramedics inside my house, all yelling for me to stay outside. I had no idea what was happening. I knew my mother didn’t feel good in the morning but I didn’t think it was anything serious. When I got out of the house I saw them rushing out the door. They had my mom on a stretcher and rushed her into the ambulance. Next came my dad on a stretcher, then my brother, and then my sister. I had no idea was what going on. The house was still standing and nothing was going on outside so I was very confused as to what had happened to my family and how they were so sick they had to be rushed to a hospital in an ambulance. After they were all in the ambulance, a paramedic came up to me and informed me that all of my family members were infected with the Black Plague. He said none of them could be around me or I could get extremely sick as well. All of my family members were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, and they all had to be put in quarantine in the hospital. From that point on I knew my life would change forever. How was I supposed to live alone, and survive and extremely contagious disease such as the Black Death?
