When Derek So came to do a Tae Kwan Doe demonstration, he taught us important movements that would help us to fight. I really enjoyed Derek’s presentation because I thought it was not only fun, but we learned useful information. If you ever get yourself into a bad situation where you may have to fight someone off, the best thing to do is just walk away from the scene. But if you are forced to fight, we learned how to dodge a punch, throw a kick, and knock someone out with a quick punch to the face. I also learned some interesting information about martial arts, and how it is practiced.

The school nurse, Mrs. Malonowski came into our class to talk about how to survive a natural disaster, and first-aid. The natural disaster she used as an example was a tornado. The first thing you would do if there were a tornado is find safe shelter. You need to be in an area that has no windows, so the window glass will not shatter and possibly cut you. It is also good to always have extra food and first-aid supplies in case you were in a situation where you would either have to stay home for couple of days, or if someone around you get injured and you have no way of getting help. Many serious injuries can happen during a tornado. If someone were to break a limb, you would need to find a straight metal object, possibly a curtain rod, and some cloth to wrap the limb with, possibly a curtain. To help the person from being in more pain, you want to line the curtain rod with the bone so that it will straighten it out. Next, you want to wrap the curtain rod, lined up straight on the arm, with the curtain. Doing this will help ease the pain, and possibly stop the bone from breaking more. Being impaled by an object is another common injury that occurs during a tornado. If someone is impaled by an object, you do not want to remove the object yourself. If you remove the object yourself, you could risk having that person die from bleeding out too much. Instead you want to make sure the object stays where it is, so it does not go in further. Knowing some of the basic first-aid tips could help you save a life one day.
Mrs. Malonowski taught very useful information that could be used in my scenario, surviving the Black Death. One useful piece of information is that your body can not go more than 3 days without water. If you are staying in your home for anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks, you will need lots of water. You should drink up to a gallon a day. You will also need food that will keep, and is not too difficult to prepare. If you get a rat bite, you should clean it out, and wrap it well to keep it from possibly getting infected. Although it is not a very active situation with major injuries, you still need to know how to live on your own, and how you should treat minor injuries. The information I learned from Mrs. Malonowski’s presentation can be applied to the movie The Shallows because in that movie a girl is being hunted by a shark and has to survive on her own. She gets attacked by the shark and gets some major wounds, but she has the survival strategies to survive. At one point in the movie, she tore her shirt and wrapped it around her leg to stop it from bleeding. If she would not have known how to stop her leg from bleeding so much, then she easily could have died from excessive blood loss. Mrs. Malonowski’s presentation will help very much throughout this course as we learn how to survive different scenarios. On September 29, the assistant principal, Mr. Melhorn came into our class to talk about active shooters, and how to stay safe during an active shooter situation. Mr. Melhorn is also involved in groups where they meet and talk about safety plans for a school in case there ever did happen to be an active shooter, therefore he is very informed on the topic and knows the right protocol to take in case of any emergencies. There are 3 different actions you can take when you are involved in an active shooting. The first, and best action to take would be to evacuate the area if possible. Unless the shooter is nearby, or you do not know where he is which in that case you should hide in a safe spot instead of attempting to leave. If you come in contact with the shooter while trying to hide or evacuate, then you must try and fight them off. Using anything to throw at them, even if it’s a shoe, would help to distract them even for a second if that’s what will help you to get away from the situation quicker. If you do decide to evacuate the area, then you must have a plan for where you will exit and where you are deciding to go. If you do not have a set plan, then you should not evacuate. Not only should you have your first planned route, but you should also have a secondary route in case something goes wrong with your first plan. If you do not have a set plan or a second set route, then you could begin to panic and not know where to go or where the shooter may be. Staying calm is one of the most important actions to take while in an emergency situation like an active shooting. If you can not evacuate the area, then you must hide away in a small, dark, windowless area, and block the doors so no one can break in. If you are hidden away, then the shooter will most likely not see you and bother you. Typically when there is an active shooting, the shooters go for the victims that are in the open, and an easy target. If you can not hide, or evacuate, then anything you can do to fight the shooter off is what you should do. Throwing any heavy or sharp objects at the shooter is how you should fight back. Even if you only throw a few things at the shooter, the longer you can distract him so that he doesn't shoot you or another human is good.
If you are living during the tough time of the Black Death, you may come face to face with an active shooter. There may be healthy people who will break into homes to try to shoot and kill the ill ones. They will try to kill the weaker people so that they do not spread the disease any more. It is better if they are shot, since they will already die, than if they live longer, and spread the disease more. If an active shooter breaks into your home while you are the only one living there (because you are the only healthy one alive in your family) then you can either evacuate the house, hide in your bedroom, or fight off the shooter. In this situation I would suggest that you either fight off the shooter or try and talk the shooter down and tell them you are both innocent and healthy. If you evacuate your house then you will be entering a deadly situation because the plague spreads through the air. If you hide in a room that hasn’t been 100% sanitized, then you could also be at risk of catching the deadly disease. Staying in the home, prepared to fight off a shooter is the best way to handle an active shooter situation. As sad as it is, it is extremely important to know the right actions to take during an active shooter situation, especially because of how many active shootings occur in the U.S every year. Every school, and business area should have the correct protocol and know exactly how to handle any kind of situation in case it happens. Because of the increase of active shootings since 1982, all students and staff should know the procedure in case of any emergency. Yesterday, the biology teacher at South Western High School came in to talk to the class about evolution, how living organisms adapt to their environment, and Charles Darwin's theory. Mr. Renoll talked about Charles Darwin's life, and how he was very interested in nature. When he was a child, he would sit outside and take notes about what he observed. His father always wanted him to work in the medical field, but that wasn't what interested Darwin. Later in his life, he took a 7 year trip on a ship called The Voyage of the Beagle. This ship travelled all over the world. 20 years after travelling the world on the ship, Darwin wrote a book about his theory of evolution titled On the Origin of Species. His book became revolutionary because it had changed so many peoples thoughts about life so quickly. Darwin's Theory of Evolution had 2 main ideas. The first idea was that life on earth changes over time and splits from common ancestors. The other main idea is that evolution occurs because of natural selection. Natural selection is when living organisms with better traits, ones that can survive better in their environment, produce more offspring than living organisms with traits that can't adapt as well. Overtime natural selection makes all the organisms with the better traits outlive the ones that can't adapt as well. Evolution is the process that all living organisms take to evolve and adapt to their environment to survive.
My website topic is How to Survive the Black Death. Evolution would help one's immune system to become resistant to the plague. The black plague was extremely contagious, one could get infected by breathing it in from the air. If someone were contaminated by the plague, and their immune system was able to fight it off and they survived, then they had a healthier immune system than the others who were weak and died from it. Then the remaining survivors would reproduce and their offspring would then also have a healthier immune system to fight off the plague. Overtime our immune systems would evolve and adapt to the plague so then people would just get really sick from the plague and not die off. While I am in the class, Survival of the Fittest, I would like to learn how to make tools from nature, and how I can survive something as deadly as a zombie apocalypse, a deadly disease, or even being stranded on an island. Mr. Renoll's presentation was very interesting and informative. It is interesting to see how different animals look, and act in different regions of the world, and to know that is because they have evolved overtime to become what they need to be to survive where they live. Understanding how and why certain animals act in a different region of the world may help you to survive in that region if you are ever stranded there. I thought it was very interesting that chimpanzees and humans have a 98% DNA match. Comparing humans, and different plants or animals from how they were thousands of years ago to now is very interesting because of how things have changed, and how living organisms will continue to change to survive in their environments. |
